Micro Grant: Plot for Poverty

Plot 7F is an allotment plot where all the fresh fruit and vegetables grown are donated to local foodbanks and homeless charities.

In March 2019 Kal Gill-Faci was awarded a micro grant of £496 for her project ‘Plot 7F’.

Plot 7F is a plot located in Humphrey Park Allotments, Stretford where all the fresh fruit and vegetables grown are donated to local foodbanks and homeless charities.

Kal was successful in securing a grant for £496 from THT’s Social Investment Fund, which went towards purchasing all the necessary tools and materials needed to grow a wide variety of fruit and vegetables as organically as possible. We’re told that the typical fruit and veg that is being grown is potatoes, cauliflower, onions, kale and grapes, plus many more!

Kal says “The work I am doing to help the homeless and those experiencing food poverty with my children and great-nephew is extremely rewarding and it is our mission to continue this work with the support of members at the Allotment in Stretford for years to come.”

In addition to Plot 7F, Kal has also received donations from the other plots at the allotment and also the wider allotment community.

Speaking on this, Kal describes her passion for change on a bigger scale. “As well as promote this work across the borough and Greater Manchester we also want to reach out further and influence other major towns and cities in the U.K to do the same.”

The feedback Kal has received from the charities she donates to has been extremely positive, showing that from a small allotment plot and small amount of investment (with a lot of dedication and passion!) a real difference can be made to people’s lives. One woman who received the fresh produce in a food parcel said, “You didn’t just bring food, you brought excellent quality groceries”.
